It rings true that the people to survive an apocalypse will be the people who were surviving by their own ingenuity in the first place, people who fixed rather than replaced things, grew or made things because they couldn't afford to buy them. The bankers, lawyers and personel managers will all die out ... bring it on!

GREAT! Maybe the best story!
I remmember the end of the comedy movie "Shaun of the Dead", when a woman say that her dead zombie husband is "ALL ALIVE" (like Donald).

I'm becoming a fan of Pleasant Hollow!

A lot of people say that it is rather grotesque... I disagree... I mean we are talking about a ZOMBIE story. If you don't want to read anything grotesque then read about sleeping beauty. The story was beautifully written and I love your stories concerning this little community. It shows that real survival isn't about running around and just raiding for the food you eat. It shows the pioneer side of humanity. Good story. I would like to see another one along the same lines.

I agree with cherry darlings comment(which also affected me..). The visceral quality of the descriptions, even the mundane, sold the atmosphere extremely well. My grandfather fought with a wisteria vine in much the same matter.
The horror I experienced at the extent of the physical and mental damage this elderly lady was experiencing was priceless.
Best zombie story I've read so-far.

This was the best zombie tale I've ever read. I began to cry when Phyllis said she was barren and it took a few minutes before I could read on. When she dropped the afghan and revealed the horror of her vagina and the reason why she had sex with undead Donald, I was overcome with emotion. You see, I'm 29, but I can no longer have children. At 19, I gave birth to a healthy baby girl and everything seemed fine. The doctors and nurses made me feel like an exaggerating little brat when I told them that I hurt down there. I remember the incredulous look on their faces when they were wheeling me out to the car with my new baby and I asked for a pillow to sit on. I was told that it was normal to have pain because of the episiotomy I'd had during delivery, but my boyfriend had to carry me around for the next week because I couldn't bear to walk. Ironically once I was feeling better and well enough to stand, I passed a clot the size of a porterhouse steak in the shower, with many more to follow. Not knowing any better and not feeling pain anymore, I brushed it off, but my boyfriend made me go to the hospital. I waited calmly in the waiting room with the clot in a plastic baggie like show and tell. Once in the examination room, I realized the urgency of my situation when the nurse's face went pale and the next thing you know I was being rushed into surgery. I could totally relate to Phyllis’ loneliness and desperation because guys that I’ve dated say they’re cool with me not being able to have kids, and it’s thrilling for a while not to have to worry about contraception, but when it comes down to it, they do want children of their own. I often feel depressed and wonder what I did wrong. Whenever a coworker gets pregnant, I find myself getting sad and jealous. Your story was realistic and heartwrenching. My apologies for pouring out my life story, but this is the first zombie tale that really affected me personally.
